Lidar cameras, cameras and 3D mapping sensors are effective devices for robot vacuums to track their surroundings. They offer elite-level obstacle-avoidance. However, some prefer to stick by using a basic vacuum that is inexpensive.

In our tests, this vacuum built an editable floor map in small and large rooms, with excellent accuracy. It also cleaned up well and worked efficiently within the "No-Go Zones" we set.

1. Neato Botvac D4

If you're looking for the convenience of a robotic vacuum, but without having to make numerous sacrifices in terms of performance, this Neato is an excellent choice. The D4 is an excellent choice for those who are looking for an upright vacuum that has a lot of features. It comes with handy mapping and navigation tools, smart home integration and an easy-to-use app.

To create this bot, you'll have to connect it to its base and connect it to your Wi-Fi network at home. The Neato app will guide you through the initial setup (linking the D4 to Wi-Fi, naming it, etc.). Once the D4 has been fully charged it's possible to start a cleaning cycle.

Once you've got the D4 running, you can use the app to create an automatic schedule or manually begin any time you'd like. You can also make use of your voice to control it through Google Home or Amazon Alexa. If you own an Apple Watch you can start cleaning sessions by tapping your wrist.

In our tests, this model cleaned well on both hard and carpeted floors and picked up 91.3% of debris combined in serpentine pathways. It's not as efficient in cleaning corners and edges as higher-end models. The D4's side sensors keep it about 1.5 inches from walls. Also, it doesn't have the side-sweeping brush on all robotic cleaners. The turret's elevated design means it isn't able to be used under furniture with low clearance. It does, however, support virtual No-Go Lines, so you can draw lines on your floor plan to inform the D4 not to move there. Its 75-minute battery life is also average. However, it's a small price to pay for the ease of use this model provides.

2. iRobot Roomba 990

The iRobot Roomba is the flagship robot of the company, with top performance and a host of connected features. The 980 retails at PS899/$899 but it's typically cheaper if you shop on the internet (John Lewis or Amazon US are both great places to start).

However, issuing commands isn't instantaneous; the robot may send a queued request that can take up to several minutes to complete.

The Roomba can also return to its base station automatically after it's finished cleaning, ensuring it is always ready for the next adventure. This feature is only available on the 980 model, and it's a nice addition that makes the expensive machine more comfortable to own.

3. iRobot 985

iRobot Roomba was designed by iRobot to make your floors cleaner, more beautiful and more powerful with its powerful cleaning system, its smart navigation and smart integration with other iRobot devices. Its unique dirt detection system alerts you of areas that require more attention. Smart sensors help keep it away from dangerous obstacles and stairs. It also recharges automatically and continue cleaning until the task is done. Its intelligent mapping and vSLAM technology let it explore the entire floor of your home, keeping the track of the places it's been and which rooms it has yet to clean.

This is also iRobot’s most powerful vacuum. It is able to clean up the dirt that has deeper particles or larger pet hairs, unlike other mid-range models such as the Roomba 960. This is because the cleaner has larger brushes that rotate counter-clockwise, and an engine that has more suction power.

The Roomba 995 is also iRobot's lowest-cost vacuum, with recharge and resume, however it's not equipped with the auto-empty system that both the I6+ and I7 offer. It also doesn't have iAdapt 2.0 navigation and the camera that the I7 employs to identify objects and avoid obstacles. It can't access features like in-app containment, or save maps.

Another drawback is that the iRobot 995 doesn't come with mopping capabilities. While this isn't an issue if you only require a top vacuum, it's a major drawback for anyone interested in a hybrid robot.

The Combo J7+ is another iRobot that has automatic-empty. It can mop and vacuum. It has the same navigation as the I6+ and I7 but does not have iAdapt 2.0 and camera. It can't save any maps and doesn't have the same in-app containment options like the I7 or S9. The Combo J7+ does, however have improved automation thanks to iRobot Genius and can learn your habits for cleaning and plan cleaning schedules automatically. It also has a bigger dust bin than the I6+ and I7 - it holds 2.5 liters of debris, which is more than enough to last 60 days.

5. iRobot Roomba 960

A more affordable alternative to the 980, the 960 delivers similar performance but in a smaller. It's great on floors that are carpeted or bare as it picks up food crumbs and dirt that has been tracked in. It's also adept at navigating and avoiding obstructions. It also does a great job at cleaning embedded dirt.

This robot uses iAdapt navigation 2.0 to track its position. This lets it navigate the space efficiently and avoid getting trapped. It can see the floor as well as its obstacles and objects with the help of SLAM and a top-mounted camera. It even has low profile, which allows it to get under tables and couches. And it's able to return to its dock for recharging when needed.

The iRobot Roomba 960 makes a great choice for most homes. It's well-made, incurs less recurring expenses and comes with a larger dirt compartment, and is faster than the eufy RoboVac 11.
